Subject Commentary

Algebra Proficiency: Expert
Algebra I is the basis for all higher math. This is where the concepts begin to get really abstract and it is very important to be able to find ways to visualize what is happening. If one can create a picture of what is happening in one’s mind, one can then remember the concepts and apply them to the situations which will be used in geometry and onwards. One of the ways I help students with this is by having them use what I call a ‘trivial example’, which is an example of the rule which is so easy that I can’t get it wrong! This can help a student check the correct method even in a high-stress exam. There has to be a better way of learning than trying to remember lists of formulas… and I can almost always find it. One of my high school students used to be really scared of math… and he earned an F. This year, he is passing, and he just asked me for some extra problems so that he could practice a concept to be sure he had it clear for his next test. I don’t have to remind him of material from earlier in the year anymore, because he remembers it himself. I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

Dyslexia Proficiency: Expert
I have an Arizona teaching certificate as a special educator with a reading endorsement which recognizes my special skill in teaching reading. I spent 4 years teaching dyslexic students in a resource room setting in a private school in New York before establishing a new resource room program in a private school in Indianapolis. I led and taught that program for 5 years, successfully teaching many students with a wide variety of dyslexic symptoms. Since then I have continued to research new methods and have a range of teaching tools from which I select the ones most appropriate for your individual needs.
Elementary Math Proficiency: Expert
I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math. I have taught everything from basic numeracy all the way up to statistics and calculus, and everything in between. With this experience and my deep understanding of human learning, I can help you understand exactly which concepts are causing you difficulty and show you how to master them. I can then show you how your new skill gives you a springboard for higher learning. Besides explaining the concepts, I also give my students practical tools to remember them even in the most stressful testing situations. My goal in teaching is that you will still remember the subject in 5 years' time.
Hebrew Proficiency: Expert
I spent over 10 years in intensive study of Hebrew literature and am thoroughly expert in Hebrew grammar and style. I am completely fluent in Hebrew reading and writing. I have also taught many students the basics of Hebrew reading and comprehension and can help you build the skill of understanding the language as you read or hear it, without having to think the translation as you go.
Math This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
When students are beginning their math career it is essential that they quickly become comfortable with the basic concepts so they don’t have the opportunity to develop fear of math. To this end, I have developed many effective techniques to help them understand numbers in an easy non-threatening way. I show them the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in ways that make sense to them, and give them fun activities to practice their skills. One of the prime failures of math teaching is that children don’t become expert with their math facts such as the dreaded times tables. I have a method of teaching times tables that quickly improves students’ mastery without the drudgery of endless oral repetition and flashcards. When students become confused by graphs, I have easy methods using color coding and other tools that help them swiftly improve their proficiency. I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.
Pre-Algebra Proficiency: Expert
As students progress in math from the basics into preparation for algebra, they need to begin thinking of numbers in more abstract ways. They need to understand different kinds of fractions and negative numbers, which we don’t see around us in our everyday world. They need to think of addition and multiplication in new and more advanced ways. I show my students how these concepts relate to the world they know and how they can easily understand them. One of my students was recently hopelessly confused by integers, and after one tutoring session, she understood them and was suddenly getting over 90% of her homework correct. (And we spent half of that tutoring session on reading!) I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.
