Experience Summary
I have just earned my Master's degree in Biochemistry and am looking to finally get the opportunity to teach others in the subjects I love most. I have extensive experience in both science and foreign language that I'd love to share with others.
I started my science career in 2009 with an Amgen Scholarship to research the pore-forming unit of an acid-sensing taste channel at the molecular and cellular level. I graduated from Columbia University with an honors degree in Biochemistry in 2011 with 2 years of research experience under my belt before joining the Biochemistry program at Stanford University to research the dynamics of photosynthetic membranes in cyanobacteria. I finished my thesis in January and just graduated this June with my Master's.
I started my career in languages by achieving fluency in Spanish and working for 2 summers as an assistant translator at Spanglish Unlimited in North Carolina. I have since achieved fluency (HSK 6 level--approaching native level) in Mandarin Chinese as well, and used it to host delegations of student leaders from Peking University and Tsinghua University as Director of Events Management for Global China Connection.
I have over 400 hours of tutoring experience through this and other sites. I've been encouraged to become a professor or teacher by many people, as they've found me very patient, helpful, good at teaching, and enjoyable. I've even helped friends and students with subjects I've never taken before, learning the material on the spot, and helping them answer their questions quickly.
I'd love to give advice on the college and graduate school application process as well, and can help students prepare for the SAT, GRE, and MCAT. I received a 2280 (800 math, 750 critical reading, 730 writing) on the SAT and performed similarly on the GRE (94+ percentile quantitative, 91 percentile verbal, 84 percentile analytical writing). I received scores of 5 on all AP tests I took (Biology, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science AB, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Statistics) and got a 790 on the Spanish SAT 2. I scored 41 (14 natural sciences, 13 verbal, 14 biological sciences) on a practice MCAT without preparation.
Also, with a 40-page undergraduate Honors thesis and a 204-page Master's thesis under my belt, I'd be happy to help with writing as well.
Teaching Style
Very flexible: I will adapt to the student's needs to find the best style for the student. I've taught lecture-based, question-based, discussion-based, and practice-based lessons before, all of which I enjoy.
My Hobbies
In my free time I watch movies to improve my Spanish and Chinese, enjoy art museums and photography, and love social and ballroom dancing with friends.
Other Comments
My strongest attribute is not my academic background or my experience, but my adaptability. I have a lot of brain power and am very happy to apply it to whatever idea you have for either your own study plan or your child's study plan. I am ambitious and will not turn down challenges, so if you have something interested in mind, please contact me.
