Experience Summary
My name is Erica M. and I graduated Summa cum Laude from The College of Wooster with a B.A. in Classical Languages before coming to Eastern Michigan University for my graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence an M.A. in Linguistics. I'm now employed as a software developer for a local company, but I miss working with Latin and I'd like to do anything I can to increase student involvement, interest, and success with the subject that I fell in love with.
Teaching Style
I subscribe to a very mathematical approach to learning "dead" languages, influenced and bolstered but not supplanted by modern language learning techniques. Don't let any of that scare you, however -- despite their distance in time and location Latin and Greek can be very relatable languages, from their influence on the Marvel and DC mythoi to the world of Harry Potter.
My Hobbies
I am an avid reader and training in dance as well as aerial arts. Fun facts: I have worked for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, own a small library of close to a thousand books, am a classically trained ballet dancer, and have two pet tarantulas named Shelob and Jerusalem Spider.

My M.A. in linguistics gives me a thorough understanding of the inner workings of the English language, which is solidified by my years studying the intricate grammar of Latin and Ancient Greek. I spent three years working as an editor for the world's largest online linguistics journal, The LINGUIST List. I have experience with reading, writing, editing, and tutoring in English grammar as it pertains to the study of foreign languages. |

For my Junior Thesis and part of my graduating requirements for my B.A., I wrote a 50 page paper on the Greek origins of Latin slang in the works of Plautus. For my Senior Thesis, I wrote a 150 page paper on introductory Latin textbook methodologies, including a proposal for my own new beginning Latin textbook. I also spent three years as an editor for the world's largest online linguistic resource. |
