Experience Summary
2 years experience teaching Art at the college level. This work often includes reading and writing assignments, slide presentations, one-on-one planning sessions, small group discussions, and frequent group critiques. In each of these exercises, I work to help students develop critical thinking skills, an expanded vocabulary for speaking about art within contemporary and art historical contexts, and proficient comprehension and execution of the concepts we discuss in class. I encourage and facilitate a supportive, engaging, and academically rigorous learning environment for students of all skill levels.
Teaching Style
No matter the subject I'm teaching, I emphasize the importance of critical thinking, time management, and planning. I work to develop a detailed sense of each student's interests and goals, to make sure that I provide the most helpful information and guidance. In my work as a printmaking and drawing instructor, I encourage students to bring their reading, writing, and research into class, so that we may expand the range and depth of their technical skill and development of concepts. Problem solving skills are an integral part of an artistic practice, and students speak with me individually, consult reference texts, and have time to work through problems with other students. This conversation continues in formal critique sessions, in which I ask students to share their solutions with their classmates. When students feel welcome to contribute their findings to the class, they pay more attention as they work, take responsibility for problems that arise, and develop a deeper understanding of the medium. This creates a safer and more collaborative working environment for the class.
