About Me

Experience Summary

Time spent attending conferences and workshops began to help me learn how to help my severely-dyslexic son and grandson. Then I helped apply some of the concepts learned to help several dyslexic families with the problems they had including ADD/ADHA, organizational, spelling, reading, and comprehension issues. I have been volunteering for several years gaining experience along the way. Every student I have helped has had some kind of learning disability involved and guess those have various levels of dyslexia. In just a few cases have I been successful in getting them to have their children diagnosed. I have recently improved the outcomes of several students who have come to me and taken a complete non-reader and made him into a successful lst grade reader in a relatively short period of time. I have helped a student improve his reading level and am getting his performance to a 2nd-grade level. He had repeated the first grade; and before I came along, he was not willing to work with his Mother on homework issues. I changed all that with some of the programs I have, and I changed his "cannot do" attitude to a "can do" attitude.

Subject Commentary

ADD/ADHD This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I help identify ADD/ADHD symptoms for a child who may never have been identified as well as to having them seek allergy/asthma treatment if warranted. Milder forms of ADD are almost never identified, but causes the child some difficulty at home or at school. I use a lot of handouts to inform families who may have these problems in their children. I make referrals to the professionals when warranted. I use a diagnostic form to help you see if your child has some of these characteristics. It can have a profound negative effect on organizational skills which I teach, how to get through homework, and an option most do not know about doing, use some programs at home that can help students turn around some of their difficult behaviors they exhibit.
Basic Learning Skills Proficiency: Expert
I first assess your reading ability, and whether you are having problems in math as well. Review the TPRI scores if you are beyond 2nd grade to see what the last one taken shows. Work on improving your vocabulary and comprehension skills, and start the early introduction of how to teach sequencing skills, organizational skills, check into your spelling abilities, how to tackle homework, and offer help aids for anyone who gets an explanation about a paper to do at home but cannot remember what they are to do. I provide solutions to some of these problems.
Dyslexia This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Had a son with severe dyslexia as well as being extremely gifted which made identification difficult. I learned through being on the International Dyslexia Association branch board for 14 years as a lay parent by attending workshops, conferences, and got exposed to various teaching strategies how to help such a student. They may come in mild, moderate, and severe levels, along with other co-existing conditions like dysgraphia (poor handwriting), most excel at math, but some have difficulty with word problems because of their problems with reading and comprehension. Teach about some of the problems being gifted bring to the equation, and what your educational options might be. My language intervention program has showed huge success and is producing significant improvements in reading skill, comprehension, and done in a minimal amount of time which saves you money in the long run. I prevent reading failure and get you on to the path of success.
Elementary Proficiency: Expert
I am currently helping elementary students develop reading proficiency, comprehension for elementary students, have available the TAKS and sample STAARS testing for all elementary level requirements. I am able to get you ready for the STAARS tests by my proven methods. Depending on the time available before testing in mid-March of 2013, whether I am able to help you achieve a passing grade. I help you get identified as a dyslexic and declared Special Ed to have you able to get the Modified or Alternate test in the STAARS. Should have time to help you get ready for any Retake Exams.
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Expert
In addition to being degreed, I graduated from a professional secretarial school where I became an expert in punctuation and also in grammar. I have edited several professional papers for students and proofread a newletter for a professional organization. Helped a Ph.d Candidate correct her professional paper, reviewed, and corrected several scientific Abstracts for science fairs.
Elementary Phonics Proficiency: Expert
I have taught a proven method to a complete non-reader who did not know his basic words to having him completely reading by 7 months at which time he achieved a fluency rate of 60 wpm. In just 2 months' work, I had raised his TPRI scores from 0's and 1's with a Tier 2 ranking to mostly 4's and 5's in just 2 months. Illness, missed sessions, and summer vacations caused student to miss a lot; and if he had not missed so much, I could have had him reading earlier. My system is unique and works! My system teaches you to read ANY word and be successful with a word you have never seen before! It also helps improve spelling difficulties dyslexics usually have as well.
Elementary Reading Proficiency: Expert
First session I assess your reading ability, and determine where you should be and whether you possibility could be dyslexic. You may also have several other conditions that could be affecting your ability to read, and need to get these areas identified. Will make referrals to those professionals who can help you.
Elementary Science Proficiency: Expert
Teach you how to deal the current chapters assigned, and how to deal with the end-of-chapter questions more effectively. If student has a conceptual difficulty, have a solution to what works if they do.
Elementary Social Studies Proficiency: Expert
Can improve a student's ability to learn the material given in the social studies book. I teach how to cover the material, learn new vocabulary words, and how to answer the end-of-chapter questions. I teach you how to tackle the vocabulary of social studies, and teach you how to outline the basics in the chapter.
Elementary Study Skills Proficiency: Expert
I help you learn how to study for the tests taken, how to review for a test, or a pop quiz. I give you the options of what you can do to improve if you are having difficulty.
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Expert
I review with you the words we cover in reading. If you do not know the word or its meaning, we discuss it. We come back to reviewing what you did not know to make sure you now know it. I give sample tests to cover what you did not know (the before and the after) to be able to show the desired improvement. I ask you to learn other words that have a similar meaning.
Hearing Impaired Proficiency: Expert
Helped identify an elementary student in 3rd grade who had been receiving speech services when he had never been identified for having a profound hearing loss in his left ear which was causing him to talk "funny". Referred the parent to an audiologist; and because the student was already receiving special ed services, I got all of his hearing identication paid for by his school district. I was able to use the ASHA material distributed to his ARD Committee and got the services approved for the student. It never occurred to the school or the ARD Committee he was receiving speech therapy for sounds he could not hear. I significally improved the outcomes for this student.
Special Education This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Am considered an expert in dyslexia. I know of other special ed issues that can coexhist. I help you to understand the difficulties your child has, and what can be done about them. Some have coexisting auditory processing and/or visual processing disorders. I teach you what those are, and what can be done about them. I teach you who can help you identify these problems and make the appropriate referrals. I can pick out the dyslexic after after meeting with students and determine that they are dyslexic, then the diagnostic work confirms they are. I have also been correct about the child having ADD/ADHD and may have an auditory processing disorder and/or a visual processing disorder. If I feel I am not able to help with another disability, I will make a refer to the appropriate organization or individual who may be able to help you. I can teach you the overview about special education law.
