About Me

Experience Summary

**CURRENTLY STUDYING FOR MY APRN (that is "nurse practitioner") WITH A SUB-SPECIALTY IN CRITICAL CARE**Graduated at the top of my class, maintained 4.0 average most of my semesters despite 2 children and an alcoholic husband, tutored many students before my graduation in 1987...Since then and prior to being disabled, I worked in various mid to large hospitals, first; a "a step down unit" which entailed my first codes and other great brand new and "baptism by fire experiences" (like, med nurse for 18 patients, what to do when a chest tube becomes dislodged, a patient becomes 'status astmaticus' and so much more!)...Additionally worked as a staff nurse for ICU/CCU as my main job, and that entailed ACLS certification, code team leader, management of MANY complex patients.. (for almost 10 years in total),6 week preceptorship and then worked nights and some days for the world of: codes, arterial lines,CVP lines and maintenence,Blakemore tubes,NG tubes,J tube feeding, care of acutely psychiatric patients that also happened to be critically ill physically, elaborate dressing changes, frequent blood draws, MANY ventilator certified/dependent patients, extensive and varied patient illnesses, i.e, the aforementioned, odd and unheard of rare diseases, and need to assist doctors in emergency procedures; also routine blood gas draws on patients who were critically ill, the proper reading and interpretation of waveforms, and rhythm strips, EKG'S,care of chest tubes, care of patient's with DIC,PICC line insertion,IV insertions routinely, protocol for MI's with thrombolytic thereapy,dopamine/dobutmaine/tridil and other vasoactive IV drips , routine blood draws from patients with "no discernable veins, cardioverion, placement of Swan- Ganz catheter on febrile patients, insertion of pacemaker of several occasions, i.e. pericardialcentesis(no kit or equipment, just off the cuff) and fat embolisms from compound fractures of the femur, decubit in areas reaching the spinal cord and various boney prominences, severe stroke patients, amputees,AIDS patients, as it was first recognized, tracheotomies, hepatitis and TB, along with other communicable diseases... and too much more to list here...then I did high tech home care, hospice, supervisory for 120 bed nursing homes, ICU/CCU and ER, staff nurse for an orthopedic floor, and staff relief for a hospital undergoing a strike, again home care...and more, including peds.. For the past three years I have successfully tutored nursing students from all levels, walks of life, both LPN's and RN's, and can gladly provide letters of reference from them. Additionally, I have been successfully tutoring human anatomy and physiology students and 2 microbiology students since being hired by OCC in Feb 2012

Teaching Style

Largely depends on the student's needs, but I believe in rigorous but fun learning, repeated and varied mock test-taking to improve skills, positive affirmations always improve the grades, so I use them again, individualized...Use of texts, computer for various websites and NCLEX style mock exams..finding any and all areas of weaknesses and fixing them...improving areas which are strengths..teach new study /note taking methods

My Hobbies

church activities, reading, swimming, crocheting and other needlecrafts, sewing, documentary buff, pets, children and family.

Other Comments

My most recent evaluation (anonymously done by the students)in April 2014 revealed the following information: of the 23 students I had, 14 filled out the survey-they revealed that they were "very satisfied" with my knowledge level, my ability to teach(tutor), and greatly bring them to understand the subject matter. 100% revealed that they received a grade increase of 15-40 points higher as a direct result of my tutoring. They left various comments: "Marie is the best tutor I have ever had", "Marie is awesome, really knows her stuff!", "Compared to my professor and other tutors I have had she really knows how to make this stuff understandable...presents in a way that I totally get it finally." "I wish Marie was an instructor." etc...

Subject Commentary

Anatomy This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I had a 4.0 GPA when I went to college and graduated in 1987..I received the NYSNA scholarship for best AAS nursing student in NYS...I tutored many of my classmates and successfully have tutored and presently am tutoring microbiology along with nursing students; (both LPN's and RN's) and I also work at OCC as a human anatomy and physiology tutor.
Biology Proficiency: Expert
Same as the anatomy data...
Nursing Exam This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
In my past experience and as I relayed in the above commentary under "anatomy", I was a stellar student and extremely proficient at the nursing exams, including the state board exam. I am currently prepping several students to take this exam, and did also help my classmates prepare for the NYS board exam for R.N.'s. I continue to hone my skills in this area in order to remain sharp.
Study Skills Proficiency: Experienced
I help my students to identify which of 4 categories of student they are, teach them the "Cornell method" of note taking and instill in them the differences between good and poor study habits.
Testing Strategies This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Knowing the psychology and how to "read" the test maker is key in "acing" exams, no matter how difficult the material...I am very proficient at this, all test types; (i.e. multiple choice, true/false. fill-in, matching and essay) and teach my students how to master these very critical skills as well.
Writing Proficiency: Expert
Always very gifted in the area of writing...In high school, I majored in foreign languages and had a 99 and 100 average in various English, research and creative writing, Russian language classes. In 10th grade my class work was sent to Brown University as an example to the freshman there as to how to write an essay.
