About Me

Experience Summary

I received a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary English Education in 1971 from the University of South Florida which qualified me to teach English in grades 7 through 12. However, I moved to Indiana, to start my family. I worked as a special education Istructional assistant at the elementary level for 12 years while my children were in school, and then attended the Transition to Teaching graduate program at Butler at night (while continuing to work as an IA) in order to obtain an Indiana license to teach special education. I am proud to say that I maintained a 3.8 Grade Point Average (out of a possible 4.0) throughout my time at Butler. I taught Special Education at the middle school level in a school which had students from diverse backgrounds, giving me experience at relating to many different types of students. I have decided to tutor because I miss the one-on-one relationship I was able to have with students when I was an instructional assistant. I am also able to work closely with students in a small group setting. I would not be willing to take more than 4 students per hour in order to give my best to each individual.

Teaching Style

I am able to diversify my teaching techniques in order to use the method which best helps each student. If a student seems unable to grasp a concept with one method, I continue to change my technique until he or she has conquered the concept.

Subject Commentary

Basic Learning Skills Proficiency: Expert
I have taught basic skills to all levels of elementary age students.
Creative Writing Proficiency: Experienced
I am excellent at teaching the creative writing process from start to finish.
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Experienced
I have experience teaching grammar at all elementary grade levels.
Elementary Math Proficiency: Expert
I have taught math to students in all elementary grade levels, including students that range from those with disabilities to those with above grade level abilities in other areas.
Elementary Phonics Proficiency: Expert
I have taught phonics with great success to students at all levels. One of the students I worked most closely with went from a pre-kindergarten level to a 3rd grade level in one year!
Elementary Reading
One of my favorite things to do is take a non-reader and turn him or her into a capable reader. I love it when I can take a student from hating reading to loving it!
Elementary Social Studies Proficiency: Expert
I find that many students struggle with Social Studies because they do not comprehend informational text. I read the text with the student and then help the student understand what he has read.
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Expert
I love words, and I share this love with my students. I help them use devices to understand and remember the meaning of new words.
Language Arts Proficiency: Experienced
I am experienced at Language Arts, but would prefer to teach it at the elementary level.
Math This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I have 12 years experience working as a special education assistant at the elementary school level and I am very experienced at breaking down math into small chuncks to help struggling students comprehend topics that may be taught too quickly or glossed over in the general education classroom. I prefer teaching elementary age students, but have 7 years experience as a Special Education teacher at the Middle School level, and am very competent at working at this level as well. I am willing to work with middle school age children that are not strong in math skills but have a good work ethic and a desire to improve.
Pre-Algebra Proficiency: I know the basics
I have taught Pre-Algebra to 8th graders in the past, but would need to have student bring textbook so I can check any differences in various textbooks.
Reading This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I love to read and exhibit this passion for students in an effort to interest poor readers in this subject. I have taught reading at the elementary level for 12 years (as a special education instructional assistant) and at the middle school level for 7 years as a licensed Special Education teacher. I am experienced at teaching phonics, and have used many different reading intervention programs. I combine what I feel are the best methods from various programs to provide a variety of excellent strategies for students. I am willing to tutor students in grades K through 8 in this area. In addition to being certified to teach Special Education in Indiana, I obtained a Bachelor's degree in secondary English Education in Florida.
Reading Comprehension Proficiency: Expert
I have taught reading comprehension at both the elementary and middle school level. I specialize in teaching both literary and informational text comprehension. (In my experience as a middle school special education teacher, I found that most of my students performed more poorly on the ISTEP testing on comprehending informational text than they did at literary text, so I am careful to spend time working on both types of reading.
Special Education This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I have worked as a special education instuctional assistant for 12 years at the elementary level, and have taught special education at the middle school level for 7 years. I just renewed my Indiana license which qualifies me to teach Mild Intervention in grades K through 12. I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD, autism, Cerebral Palsy, mild cognitive disabilities, Down's syndrome, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, as well as other disabilities.
Spelling Proficiency: Experienced
I am very comfortable teaching students ways to improve their spelling.
Writing Proficiency: Experienced
I am experienced at helping students decide on a topic, make a plan to go by, write a rough draft, and edit the final draft before publishing.
