Experience Summary
My name is Jessica and I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Master’s degree in Public Health. After completing graduate school, I chose to enter the field of Information Technology focusing on database management and SAS Programming for seven years. Currently, I am a stay-at-home mom to an active and happy toddler. The reason I choose to focus on public health is because there is a need for accurate information to drive decision-making and compassion service. The ability to help others is why I love being an academic tutor. There is no one way that an individual learns or processes information. At the beginning of each session, I listen to the client's needs or specific requests and ask questions about preferences and obtain additional information. Also, I make it clear in our conversations that I am here to learn with you and there is no dumb question. My goal is to be approachable and if I do not know the answer, I will do my research and respond within 24 hours.
I was introduced to tutoring as a part-time job with an organization that serves inner-city youth in undergrad. I started with high school math topics and it expanded to all subjects within the two years that I worked there. I do not have a preference as to one-on-one or small groups. I do recommend one-on-one when we are learning the fundamentals of subject areas. It is easier to explain topics and I can go at the pace set by the student or adult client. In group settings on-line, three people or less is preferred. In-person small groups, six people are a good number. I am able to review the topic(s) and then separate into smaller groups based on individual's level. I am better able to explain topics more in-depth or provide more advanced worksheets for others.
After completing grad school in 2010, I started working as freelance academic tutor. Within the past 9 years, I have gained experience in K-12 academic levels, GED test prep, ACT/GRE test prep, reviewing and teaching Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), and college math courses. My goal is to make subject matter approachable by breaking it down into smaller chunks. By layering fundamentals, instilling confidence in oneself via subject mastery, and creating an environment where asking questions is normal, we are able to meet goals together and have fun doing so.
I want to benefit students and adult clients as much as possible by being a reliable resource that enable him or her to succeed. For parents, it is important for them to know that I am invested in their child’s success and will do my best to explain concepts and complete assignments. I am open to meeting in public places, homes, or online. I am easy to reach and will always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson.
