Experience Summary
In addition to having a Master of Arts in English Literature, I have extensive experience teaching English at the college level. I have spent the last three years as the Writing Corner Director at a Kansas community college, administering all of the writing tutoring for the college. This has provided me with extensive experience tutoring students of all ability levels. I have also worked as a freelance writer and have written for regional magazines and local newspapers, so I have journalism experience. I enjoy creative writing and was the District Seven President of Kansas Authors Club. Until recently, I ran a local writers group, hosting workshops for writers in many different genres. I am currently working on a mystery novel.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is very interactive. I like to begin a tutoring session by helping the student set a goal for the session. We then begin work on the material. During the session I encourage the student's learning by asking open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking. With writing assignments, the pen is always in the student's hand and, with guidance, the student makes choices about his or her writing. I use a method I call guided discovery, which encourages students to think in depth about their subject, discovering new methods and information with guidance from me.
