Proficiency: Expert
|
English is a general term used to indicate writing, reading, literature, grammar in high school courses. |
Grammar |
Proficiency: Expert
|
Grammar is like math; I have studied modern English grammar. Although today grammar is not usually taught in most schools, I feel that it should be brought back to the basics. |
Language Arts |
Proficiency: Expert
|
Again here language arts is a basic course that includes spelling, writing, grammar, handwriting, and literature in elementary and middle school. Some schools offer reading in their language arts programs. |
Literature |

American literature is my favorite. As a English teacher I taught world literature (including Greek mythology), American literature, and English literature. |

Reading is such an important skill; I have a professional Texas state reading certificate as well as a MA in Reading. |
Reading Comprehension |
Proficiency: Expert
|
Reading comprehension is taught with other reading skills such as vocabulary development, scanning for main idea, etc. |
Shakespeare |
Proficiency: Experienced
|
Have taught Shakespeare as part of the English literature class in grade 12. I have actually been to Strafford Upon Avon and have seen many plays in England. |
Spelling |
Proficiency: Expert
|
Spelling is part of language arts. Rather than memorizing a list of words weekly, I prefer to work with patterns that will help spelling most any words. Even though spell correct helps today, it is good to know how to spell as many words as one can from memory. |
TOEFL |
This is one of my top subjects!
Proficiency: Expert
|
I have taught iBased TOEFL ever since it was introduced several years ago. The iBT requires students to write, read, speak, and listen to English at an academic level. The writing section is especially difficult as it requires a student to do two types of writing: 1.intergrated - read a passage, listen to a person discuss the passage, then write an answer to the question that is asked about the passage 2. Independent writing - write a short essay (about 300 words) on a given topic. |
Writing |
Proficiency: Expert
|
I have experience in teaching writing as a process; prewriting, writing, revising, editing, and publishing. Many students associate writing with the editing process as it deals with spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. |
