Individualized instruction, as people learn in different ways. Accommodate learning styles, adjusting for students with aural, visual, or sensate learning styles. Include theory in lesson plans. Students participate in recitals, competitions, and other local playing opportunities sponsored by Williamsburg Area Music Teachers (member), Williamsburg Music Club (member), Peninsula Music Teachers Association (member), (affiliate of MTNA), and Cadenza Music Club (affiliate of NFMC).
Teaching Style
FLUTE
Individualized, with emphasis on sound, followed by literature and technique. My philosophy stems from teachers who studied with students of Georges Barrere ... Gerry Bernard studied with Lamar Stringfield; Jesse P. Campbell, whose father was principle violinist in NC Symphony under Lamar Stringfield. Studied briefly with Britton Johnson.
Sound focus ... ergonomic support of instrument, held in position to control breath so as to satisfy the physics of the flute ... while maintaining relaxed, injury-reducing body position. Goal is beautifully clear, not "airy" sound ... allowing purity of tones and ease of playing that leads to clean technique.
Musicianship is introduced from the beginning ... line of music, not just notes ... that lead to a sound that allows the flute to sing.
PIANO
Emphasize learning to read notation while encouraging musicality from the earliest lessons. Play duets with student, and demonstrate multiple "sounds" to encourage musicianship. Begin theory instruction from the beginning. Use varied sources for learning material, depending upon student learning style and musical interest. When appropriate, recommend advanced teachers as student progresses beyond intermediate level.
Other Comments
Current studio population includes neurodiverse adults and children/teens. Teaching styles and materials vary greatly depending upon student needs.
