Experience Summary
I am currently the mother of three children, all of whom I home school. I dedicate a great deal of my time to children and advocating on their behalf. I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University, as well as a B.A. in accounting from Baldwin Wallace College. Currently, I am a doctoral candidate working on my dissertation in curriculum and instruction at Kent State University, while specializing in international/multicultural education. I have taught in both urban and suburban school settings. I am a certified teacher, a state endorsed reading specialist and have worked as a mentor to pre-service student teachers in the field of education.
Teaching Style
I always remember having a passion for education, for example my favorite game as a child was school where I got to be the teacher. Thus, I thought I had found my niche once I became a certified schoolteacher and secured my first teaching assignment. I was enamored with my students and the learning process. However, my enthusiasm quickly dissipated when the reality of “schooling” was revealed. I no longer felt joy, but heartache at the systemic annihilation of inner-city children. However, one thing inspired me to keep coming to teach, day after day, despite the school’s limited supplies, lack of safety, and irreverence for aesthetics; it was the will and determination of my students. They came to school day after day, excited to just learn and receive reassurance that education is liberating and knowledge is power. It was with these students in mind, along with my own children and my childhood experiences that the desire to transmute the system of education and learning across the US was fueled. These are the motivators that keep me pursuing this dream, despite obstacles that at times can seem insurmountable. I feel it is my duty to press on as each student presses on toward the hope of creating a better world for all of us and the use of poetry presses us all onward and upward.
