Experience Summary
I have always excelled in school. My master's degree GPA is 3.8. my undergraduate degree GPA is 3.85. As a retired marine officer, I have had many opportunities to teach in a military environment. In addition, I served as the School Liaison Officer for the U. S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay School system for 3 years. During that time I also taught a college freshman English class for Troy State University aboard the base. Upon retirement, I tutored and mentored middle school students for 2 years. I also volunteered 2 years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for a 3 children. This advocacy involved keeping up with school progress in special programs and assisting the kids to adapt and overcome environmental difficulties. I have owned and operated my own small business (a roller skating rink) for the past 12 years. In the rink, I have regular contact with kids of all ages. I am familiar with most of the tricks that kids will try with adults. I am firm but fair. I get results.
Teaching Style
I have 20 years experience in the marines, so I have a no nonsense approach to teaching and tutoring. My own two children (boys, now grown) will tell you that despite my military bearing, I am patient and understanding with kids. I believe the best way to teach children (or anyone) is to create the conditions that will encourage and allow them to teach themselves. I believe that adults model for children continuously. Children mimic our thought processes and our problem solving techniques. We teach best through example. My goal has always been to give children the tools and self-confidence to think and explore for themselves. I model self-confidence and creative problem solving. I encourage kids to ask questions and develop the skills for finding the answers. I mentor as much as I tutor.
